F1 Testing: What you need to know!

When and where is testing?

Pre-season testing will take place in Bahrain over three days, starting on Thursday 23rd February and ending on Saturday 25th February.

Testing will start at 7 am GMT each day and will run for four hours.

There will be an hour break at 11 am before cars return to the track at 12 pm GMT with the second session running for four and a half hours.

What's new?

The biggest change this year is the higher ride height. This will help reduce the bouncing that some teams suffered with last year; most notably Mercedes.

While there have been no major safety changes, one change is the roll hoops have been strengthed following Guanyu's dramatic crash at Silverstone last year.

How will the teams gather data?

Teams will only be allowed one car on track at a time. Teams are expected to give their two drivers a session each per day, with some teams sending their reserve drivers out as well.

Some cars will be covered in fluorescent paint which is used to visualise airflow over the car.

Another eye-catching feature that is only seen during testing is the aerodynamic rakes, which are covered in sensors that measure where the air goes after it hits the car.

How accurate are the timesheets?

In the early stages of testing, times should be treated with caution. Some teams may be focussing on long runs, short runs or managing tyres.

Many teams will be 'sandbagging' to not reveal their true pace before the opening race. However, Max topped the testing timesheets during last year's testing and went on to win the championship.

Who are the ones to watch?

As usual, all eyes will be on Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari.

The Red Bull team remains unchanged from 2022, and there's no reason to suspect they won't be at the top of the grid again.

2022 was the first year Lewis Hamilton didn't win a race in his 16-year career, so Mercedes have a lot to prove.

After two years of terrible strategy calls, Ferrari will be hoping to make their way up the grid. With a new team principal and having focussed on developing the 2023 car in 2022, Ferrari fans have a lot to be optimistic about.
