It isn't all good news though as some drivers have seen their eco-friendly route increase by up to 45 minutes. They do, however, still give users the option to use the fastest route as before the update.
According to Google, the most fuel-efficient routes have fewer hills, less traffic and more constant speeds. The update was released as a way to help drivers be more eco-friendly but it will also help drivers save money.
Google says: “Since launching in the U.S. and Canada, it’s already estimated to have helped remove more than half a million metric tons of carbon emissions — equivalent to taking 100,000 fuel-based cars off the road. We also recently rolled out the feature in Germany.”
Google's push for more environmentally friendly transport doesn't stop there. Cycle routes have been updated in a bid to convince more people to swap four wheels for two.
This isn't the first eco-friendly feature Google has introduced to Maps. In 2018 the company introduced EV charging information to its app. In July, the company rolled out features for bike navigation with details like the amount of car traffic and types of roads along the route.
