It's a fact that UK drivers are much more used to manual cars than our American friends. However, the UK is heading towards an age of automatic cars as well. Research shows that the last person to take a manual driving test in the UK could be born in the next 5 years.
How will the UK approach the age of auto?
2021 - New auto cars outsell new manual cars for the first time.
2027 - The last person to take their driving test in a manual car is born.
2029 - The last new manual cars are sold.
2043 - Almost every car on the road is automatic as the last of the manual cars reach the end of their lifespan.
There's no doubt that the future is electric. At least, it is according to governments around the world. This is one of the main reasons why the future is looking automatic.
But why are all electric cars automatic?
There are a couple of reasons why all electric cars are automatic...
High rpm
Electric cars can achieve up to 20,000 rpm compared to conventional cars 4,000 - 6,000 rpm, giving electric cars a far greater power range. This takes away the need to have more than 1 gear. Conventional cars need to keep between 1,500 - 2,000 RPMs to keep the engine in its happy zone. Unlike conventional engines, electric engines make their best power output over an incredibly broad rpm range.
Cost
With no need for intricate engines, the cost of manufacturing an electric car is much lower than installing a full driveline system.
